Job description:

FDD Claims Manager - Hong Kong or Shanghai

Reporting to Associate Director, Claims.


Overall objectives:

To handle a variety of FDD and P&I claims for our Chinese and Asian Members, under the supervision of Senior Claims Managers and/or Associate Directors, to minimise third party claims against London P&I's members in a cost-effective and flexible manner and provide them with advice and guidance in respect of legal disputes.

Key duties:

  • To have overall control of claims from inception to completion in line with the claims procedures in the Quality Manual, always making due reference to the Senior Claims Managers and/or Associate Directors as necessary.

  • Where appropriate experience has been gained, to carry out the day-to-day handling of a narrow range of claim types without supervision.

  • After due consultation with the Senior Claims Managers and/or the Associate Directors and/or Members as may be appropriate, to appoint and oversee service providers to handle the claims effectively and raise any issues of concern with the Associate Director.

  • To liaise with Members and brokers to ensure Members' reasonable needs/requirements/instructions are fully met by clear presentation and interaction.

  • To reserve appropriately both in terms of entering an initial reserve promptly and keeping the reserve under review, in conjunction with administering the electronic claims records and provision of proper reporting to Line Managers and Claims Review Board (CRB) and ensuring all Estimate Authority Exceeded (EAX's) are approved, as required.

  • To attend events/courses and ensure knowledge base widens to cover all types of claims.

  • To provide advice on specific claims types, as required, to Members.

  • To contribute to London P&I knowledge management and publications, such as Stoploss or Club News, on request from the editorial teams.


Personal skills:

Communication

Must have good oral and written skills (inter alia, to give clear, concise instructions to service providers and explain actions/situation to members).

Verification

Must be able to demonstrate an ability to identify with the assistance of others what evidence, whether expert or factual, is required in support of a claim and to test the evidence, as appropriate.

Decisiveness

Be able to act promptly to deal with matters and inquiries (including appointments of correspondents, legal and technical experts).

Judgment

Must know when to settle claims rather than take them to court and when to ask for assistance.

Presentation

To be able to present cases to inter alia, the CRB.

Team Working

To coordinate team working on cases (lawyers/experts, etc.).

Problem Solving

To analyse technical reports and shipping documentation in order to ascertain cause of incident and to read or form a legal opinion on the Member's liability to third parties.

Qualification

Common law qualified.

Experience

A minimum of 2 years' experience as a Claims Manager in a similar environment in combination with shipping litigation experience or 3+ years' claims handling experience. Prior experience or evidence of interest in working with the Korean marker preferred.

Technical

Use of e-mail, word processing, and a claims handling recording system/software.

Language

English and Mandarin. 

Other

Must be prepared to respond out of hours to incidents. Provision of contact details out of hours is a requirement. Overseas postings are a possibility on an occasional basis.

Objectives

Estimation

Early, accurate and consistent estimation of the total cost of claims and costs as evidenced by shape of the CTC graph on CSR.  Providing adequate description and detail in CSR. Prompt closing of files

Electronic file administration and profiling

Maintaining an up to date and easy accessible electronic file for other users 

Control of costs

Can they be measured by review of cases settled in previous six months? - could we have spent less? - did we instruct the right people? Initiative to query bills where relevant.

Diary Events 

To clear diary events  and EAX promptly and 7 days in advance of quartile points.

Special skills 

To provide advice consistent with qualifications and experience on particular claims types.

Knowledge management

Providing useful material and other feedback from files or otherwise  to knowledge management administrators/line managers.

Peer reviews

Participation in peer reviews through the ISO auditing process every six months.

Production of claims reports

To write, maintain and update as per manual.

Business development/QA

Identifying and making suggestion to line managers concerning areas where the claims management/claims administration/costs control and business development can be improved.

Knowledge and application of Quality and Claims Process Manual processes.
