Vehicle shipments: guidelines on presentation and loading
London P&I is highlighting the first industry good practice guidance published by the Vehicle Carrier Safety Forum (VCSF): Common Guidance on the loading and presentation of vehicles. The guidance is available here.
The purpose of the guidance is to help manage the risks associated with shipping unaccompanied vehicles, including electric and hybrid vehicles. It is also intended to promote the safety of terminal and vessel personnel and protect property, including the vessels carrying the vehicles.
The guidance includes a checklist covering relevant matters at each stage of the shipment process, including:
- booking
- arrival of vehicles at the terminal
- loading and stowing
- the voyage
London P&I notes that the guidance is intended to be used alongside specific procedures issued by individual vehicle manufacturers, shippers, terminals or carriers. These procedures may cover matters such as vehicle separation on board the vessel and emergency response.
The VCSF is a consortium of vessel operators, insurers and other industry experts. Its role is to promote safety on vessels designed to carry vehicles. The guidance is supported by industry bodies including the International Group of P&I Clubs and the International Chamber of Shipping.
Members and Assureds involved in the shipment of vehicles should note the guidance.
