The spongy moth is one of the most damaging and invasive biosecurity threats currently facing international shipping.

Native to China, Japan, Korea and the Russian Far East, female spongy moths can fly up to 40 km (25 miles) to lay eggs during 'flight season', typically between May and October.

Drawn to ship lights, they lay egg masses in almost every part of a vessel. These eggs are hard to spot, extremely tough and can survive long ocean crossings and extreme heat, cold and salt spray for over a year. If transported overseas, they hatch into caterpillars that feed on native tree and shrub species, stripping forests, damaging agriculture and threatening local ecosystems. 

Vessels arriving at a regulated country with infestation face delays, quarantine or refusal of entry. For owners, charterers and crew, that means disruption, added costs and liability.

London P&I advises Members and Assureds to take great care to inspect their vessels during spongy moth season to avoid potential liabilities to their vessel, cargo and crew.
