Underwriter (Far East)
Responsible to: Underwriting Director/ Associate Director and General Manager
Location: Hong Kong
Overall Objectives of the Role
To handle own Member/Assured Accounts without supervision. For new business offered or out of the ordinary requests/consultation with the Underwriting Director/Associate Director and General Manager is required.
Key Duties:
- To consider merits of quoting and declining new Owners and Charterers business and renewal accordingly.
- To monitor the flow of information necessary for the addition or deletion onto the Underwriting records system.
- To maintain and develop close relationships with existing Members/Assureds and Brokers and seek out new opportunities.
- To arrange visits to Members/Assureds, prospective Members/Assureds and brokers and report on these visits to the Sales and Marketing Committee.
- To liaise with Claims, Credit Control and Ship Inspection departments in relation to matters affecting cover.
- To undertake such overseas travel as may be required.
- To monitor industry and market related developments.
- To represent the department at internal and external meetings.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Personal Skills:
Judgment: Must have an understanding of mutual and fixed premium risks and be able to evaluate new business offered to the Association according to the Association’s Underwriting Guidelines.
Team Working: To fully understand the workings of the Association and the insurance market as a whole, and to work together with individuals within these sectors in order to efficiently deal with enquiries which may arise.
Communications/Presentation: To be able to present the Club to Members/Assureds, prospective Members/Assureds and Brokers.
Gathering Market Intelligence: To be able to gather market intelligence quickly and efficiently using a network of contacts which have been developed and maintained by the individual.
Education: Degree level – bachelor and Master degree preferably in Law and/or Shipping
Experience: Minimum 5 years’ experience in shipping insurance industry, underwriting and claims experience with first class Chinese insurance companies.
Over 3 years’ onshore experience in top class shipowner company, with offshore and specialist operation knowledge preferred.
Technical: IT skills essential
Other: Mandarin and English speaker
Must be able to attend functions during out of work hours and be available to make overseas trips.
OBJECTIVES

Senior Claims Manager (Far East)
Responsible to: Claims Associate Director
Responsible for: Mentoring Claims Managers, as required
Location: Hong Kong
Overall Objectives of Role
To work without supervision, to minimise third party claims against the Club’s Members and to provide legal advice on charter party and other contractual disputes, in a cost effective and flexible manner.
Key Duties
- To have overall control of claims from inception to completion in line with the claims procedures in the Quality Manual and with due reference to the Associate Directors as necessary.
- To carry out the day-to-day handling of a wide range of claim types without supervision and to handle appropriately sensitive issues arising during the course of claims handling.
- To assist in the preparation of Committee reports, as required.
- After due consultation with the Associate Directors and/or Members as may be appropriate, to appoint and oversee service suppliers to handle claims effectively and provide advice and raise any issues of concern with the Line Managers.
- To liaise with owner Members and Charterer assureds to ensure their reasonable needs/requirements/ instructions are fully met by using clear presentation and interaction.
- To reserve appropriately both in terms of entering an initial reserve promptly and keeping the reserve under review, in conjunction with administering the electronic claims records and provision of proper reporting to Line Managers and Claims Review Board (CRB) and ensuring all Estimate Authority Exceeded (EAX’s) are approved promptly.
- To attend events/courses and ensure that one stays abreast of relevant legal and procedural developments.
- To provide general advice to Members/Assureds undertaking any necessary research, in close liaison with the Line Manager.
- To be prepared to mentor Claims Managers as required, and to run training sessions or provide advice consistent with qualifications and experience as required.
- To identify claims trends or issues which may be of relevance to the Club’s knowledge management and Club publications, such as Stoploss or Club News, and to assist in the preparation of articles for external publications or internal knowledge management data base, as requested or using own initiative.
- To participate in internal Committees, as requested, and to develop an understanding of the business as a whole.
PERSON SPECIFICATION

Added value - Ability to identify and understand the significance of legal and evidential issues and to test the advice received, as appropriate. Ability to demonstrate an independent understanding of the Members’ requirements.

Judgment - Ability to identify primary issues and objectives required to lead to the successful conclusion of a claim and acting upon them. Ability to contribute to the overall strategy adopted in the handling of claim.
Mentoring - Encouraging and assisting colleagues of all levels to develop these same skills.
Presentation - Ability to present thoughts clearly and concisely in CRB and draft committee reports .
Problem solving - Ability to identify possible means by which a claim may be resolved to the benefit of Member/Assured and Club.
Teamworking - To coordinate team working on cases (lawyers/experts etc.)
Relationship Building - Willingness to develop personal ties with colleagues, Member employees and third parties and promote the Club in an appropriate manner, including participation in marketing through marketing visits.
Time Management - Ability to handle claims in a manner that is consistent with their importance.
Education - Legally qualified, preferably English law qualified.
Experience - a minimum of 5 years PQE or equivalent experience with a FDD insurer. Previous experience working with Far East clients preferred.
Technical - Use of e-mail, word processing and a claims handling recording systems/software.
Other - Must be prepared to respond out of hours to incidents. Provision of contact details out of hours is a requirement. Overseas postings are a possibility on an occasional basis. Mandarin Speaker preferred.
