History

During our history - over more than 150 years - we have grown to become one of the world’s leading P&I Associations.

Founded in 1866, the London Steam-Ship Owners’ Mutual Insurance Association (or the London P&I Club as we are commonly known today) was formed in response to a burgeoning British Merchant Marine. It was a time of transformation, from sailing vessels to steel screw steamers, the landscape of world shipping and global trade was changing – and in turn, the insurance arrangements surrounding their protection.  

During our long history we have seen momentous global events and industry change. But our international outlook and a focus on providing members with expert, quality service have remained at the heart of our work.
