Last week, the US added Tidewater Middle East Co to its list of designated entities.  Tidewater Middle East Co is a port operating company in Iran and is reportedly owned by sanctioned entities including Mehr Bank and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.  Tidewater Middle East Co is not connected with Tidewater Inc, a well know provider of off shore services.

The Correspondent in Benin, TCI Africa, report that piracy in West African waters is on the rise. Most attacks occur while ships are at anchor or close to the shore, unlike East Africa, where Somali pirates have netted millions of dollars in ransoms in exchange for the release of ships captured hundreds of miles from the coast.

Members will be aware of the ongoing troubles in Libya and the various sanctions against Libya originally implemented by the UN, EU and USA (see the Club’s News Alert of 8 March 2011 for further details). Since then, the UN have passed a further resolution (UNSCR 1973 (2011)) implementing, amongst other things, a no fly zone and enforcement of an arms embargo (for a full copy of UNSCR 1973 (2011) click here).
